Oranda Black Large – A Stunning Fancy Goldfish for Your Aquarium
The Oranda Black Large goldfish captivates with its striking black coloration and distinctive wen, a head cap that grows with age. Hailing from East Asia, this fancy goldfish brings elegance to any tank. Its round body and flowing fins create a stunning display. Therefore, it’s perfect for Aussie aquarists seeking a bold, peaceful fish.
Size and Lifespan
These goldfish reach about 18 cm, though some grow to 30 cm in optimal conditions. With proper care, they live around 15 years, sometimes more. To promote longevity, maintain clean water, offer a varied diet, and avoid overcrowding. Consequently, your Oranda stays healthy and vibrant for years.
Ideal Tank Setup
A 75-litre tank suits one Oranda Black Large, with 40 extra litres per additional fish. Use smooth substrates to protect their delicate fins. Additionally, gentle water flow and plants mimic their natural habitat. Keep pH between 6.5–7.5 and temperature at 10–24°C. To replicate its natural habitat:
- Use fine gravel or sand substrate.
- Add smooth rocks or driftwood.
- Include live or silk plants for cover.
- Install a low-flow filter for clear water.
Compatible Tank Mates
Orandas are peaceful and slow-moving, making them ideal for community tanks. Therefore, pair them with other gentle fish. Avoid fast or aggressive species that may outcompete or stress them. Suitable tank mates include:
- Ryukin Goldfish
- Lionhead Goldfish
- Black Moor Goldfish
- Telescope Goldfish
Diet and Feeding
These herbivorous fish thrive on a varied diet. Offer high-quality flakes or pellets as a staple. Supplement with blanched vegetables like peas or lettuce. Feed 2–3 times daily, removing uneaten food after two minutes. Thus, you ensure a clean tank and healthy fish.
Breeding and Behaviour of Oranda Black Large
To breed Orandas, prepare a spawning tank with warmer water (20–24°C). Males show white tubercles on gills, while females appear rounder when carrying eggs. After spawning, remove adults to protect eggs. Feed fry infusoria or crushed flakes. Their calm, graceful movements make them a delight in any aquarium.
