Key Characteristics & Care

  • Size & Appearance: Adults grow to about 1.75 to 2 inches (4.4–5 cm).Males: Feature large, impressive black dorsal fins and may show a purple hue.Females: Typically have shorter fins with a distinctive red splash on their pelvic, anal, and adipose fins.
  • Tank Requirements:Minimum Tank Size: While a 10-gallon (40L) tank can work for a small group, a 20-gallon (75L) tank is highly recommended to accommodate their active swimming and schooling needs.Water Conditions: They prefer tropical temperatures between 72°F and 82°F (22–28°C) and a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0 to 7.5.Environment: They thrive in densely planted tanks with driftwood and floating plants to provide the shade they prefer.
  • Social Behavior: These are peaceful schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10. Males often engage in harmless "mock battles" (sparring) to show off their fins and establish dominance.

Diet & Tank MatesAsomnivores, they accept high-quality flakes, granules, and frozen treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp.

  • Good Mates: Peaceful species like Neon Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras catfish, and dwarf cichlids.
  • Avoid: Long-finned or very slow fish like male Bettas or Guppies, as Black Phantoms can sometimes be fin-nippers if their school is too small.
